Opening the office for Roma education support in Elementary School Mileva Lajovic Lalatovic

NGO Young Roma on Friday, 9 October 2020 visited the Elementary School Mileva Lajovic Lalatovic.

Through an education support programme, school supplies for Roma pupils were delivered to this institution with the help of the Roma Education Fund. On that occasion, the office for associates in social inclusion of Roma students in education, which is equipped with the support of the ROMACTED programme, funded by the European Union and implemented by the Council of Europe in cooperation with the NGO Young Roma, officially started working.

Executive Director of the NGO Young Roma Samir Jaha expressed satisfaction with the cooperation with the Elementary School Mileva Lajovic Lalatovic and said that he was glad that the NGO Young Roma managed to help children entering the education system for the first time and associates Valbona Naza and Zoja Tarlamišaj from Roma communities.

- We are glad to have the opportunity to provide school supplies for all your Roma first graders. At the level of Montenegro, we donated 200 packages of school supplies for almost all Roma first graders enrolled this year. For our organization, improving the education of Roma children will be a high priority in the coming period. The mission is to contribute to the education of as many students as possible, people from the Roma community to get employment and become useful members of society - said Jaha.

Jaha pointed out the importance of mentoring support, both in primary and secondary schools.

- We are successfully implementing the mentoring support programme in high schools, where we include all Roma children in Montenegro – said Jaha.

The principal of the elementary school Mileva Lajovic Lalatovic, Vera Bozovic, thanked the NGO Young Roma for the donation and said that she is looking forward to future cooperation.

- Goodness and nobility again found space to reach those who need it the most. Regardless of the aggravating circumstances in which we find ourselves, caused by the COVID-19, there was nothing to prevent goodness. Today in the school we use a room with office furniture and modern IT equipment, for which funds were provided by the NGO Young Roma. Thus, the working conditions for associates in social inclusion and pupils from the Roma community will be better - said the school principal.

The associates are a bridge between the parents and the school, they make sure that the pupils come regularly and solve any obstacles along the way.

Associate in social inclusion of Roma in education Zoja Tarlamisaj is satisfied with the cooperation with the students and pointed out that there is always room for improvement. Mediator Valbona Naza thanked for the donation, which, as she says, is of great importance.

- It will be very useful for us in communication with pedagogues, psychologists, speech therapists, all members of the community. The hands of the mediator are outstretched for all who need it.

Pedagogue and mentor Nada Mitrovic thanked for the donation and said that this gesture is the right way for a better life and a better relationship and education of all students, but also pointed out the need to increase the number of associates.

- I emphasize the importance of cooperation with mentors from high schools. Also, I want to point out that the number of students is almost 200, and these days we expect an increase in the enrollment of Roma children. The number of associates who work in our school is two, and I think it could be even higher - said Mitrović.

The NGO Young Roma has equipped the offices at the Elementary School Blazo Jokov Orlandic in Bar and Radomir Mitrovic in Berane, which will start working in the coming period. All funds for office equipment are provided through the ROMACTED programme funded by the European Union and implemented by the Council of Europe in cooperation with the NGO Young Roma.
