Press conference and networking meeting of mentors

Conference “Education of Roma secondary school students” was organized by NGO Young Roma on Tuesday, 29th October 2019. in Podgorica.

The speakers at the conference were:

  • Samir Jaha, Executive Director of NGO Young Roma
  • Adi Sinani, Education, Employment and Labour Policy Officer for Western Balkans and Turkey, Roma Education Fund
  • Marash Dukaj, General Director of the Directorate for education of members of minority peoples and other national communities, Ministry of Education
  • Leon Gjokaj, General Director of the Directorate for improvement and protection of rights of minority peoples and other national minority communities, Ministry for Human and Minority Rights
  • Katarina Jočić, Coordinator of the project in NGO Young Roma

Conference was used as an opportunity to present results of the first year of project’s implementation “Increasing access and participation of Roma students in secondary education and transition to labour market”, and to announce activities for the second year of project's implementation.

The results of the project were presented by Mr. Jaha, Executive Director of NGO Young Roma. He provided data on the number of students who were covered by the mentoring program implemented under this project - 108 students were beneficiaries in the previous year, and 102 of them successfully finished school grade. Also, 20 students graduated from high school, and 11 of them got a job.

Paid internships were another component of the project. 31 students had the opportunity to conduct internship during the summer. Photographs of students who worked during the summer with various employers were displayed during the conference.

Afterwards, activities for the second year of project implementation were presented, and we signed contracts with mentors who were selected for school year 2019/2020.

The conference was attended by representatives of the Employment Agency of Montenegro, Center for Vocational Education, Bureau for Education Services, the Ministry of Education, international organizations, civil sector, primary schools and mentors from secondary schools in Montenegro.

The project “Increasing access and participation of Roma students in secondary education and the transition to labour market” is funded by the European Union and implemented through the Roma Education Fund (REF). NGO “Young Roma” is national partner organization for Montenegro.
