Meeting with U.S. Ambassador in Montenegro

U.S. Ambassador, H.E. Ms Margaret Ann Uyehara and Mr Zlatko Ivanovic, political adviser at the U.S. Embassy met today in Herceg Novi with Mr Milijan Mijovic, president of the NGO Youth Centre, Ms Marina Vuksanovic, president of the NGO Nada Herceg Novi and Mr Samir Jaha, executive director of the NGO Young Roma.

Besides the presentation of the current organizational activities, the meeting participants had an opportunity to discussfuture developments in Herceg Noviand main challenges that citizens are facing.

Samir Jaha, executive director of NGO Young Roma agreed with his other NGO present colleagues that unemployment (especially youth employment) is one the main concerns, which particularly affects Roma youngsters. Possible solution in that sense should be sought through developing sustainable tourism strategy, which should be more progressive in delivering benefits from the city’s potential.

Young Roma’s executive director also referred to the housing issue for Roma, which needs to be addressed very soon in two settlements in Herceg Novi, and mentioned newly successful initiative on resolving housing for 6 Roma families as a positive practice of NGO Young Roma, Municipality of Herceg Novi and German NGO Help. This kind of partnership should be expanded in all municipalities when addressing similar issues.

Meeting participants also concluded that particularly important issue is low level of Roma participation in local government. No Roma has been employed in any of the municipalities in Montenegro so far and this need to be changed promptly.
